General Bem Monument

The monument of General Józef Bem, located on Wałowa Street, was officially unveiled on 11 May 1985. The monument was founded thanks to the generosity of the Polish-Hungarian Friendship Society of Tarnów, the town’s residents and many other people not directly connected with Tarnów. The monument was designed by local artists – Bogdan Ligęza-Drwal and Stefan Niedorezo. Bem’s figure, dressed in a Hungarian general’s uniform, was cast in bronze in the works of Roman Sapa in Tarnów, and placed on a granite plinth against the preserved fragments of city walls. The inscription on the plinth says: General Józef Bem, born in Tarnów, the Polish and Hungarian Hero.
